St Barnabas Church – Birmingham

Built in the early 1800s to a design by the prominent English architect Thomas Rickman, the church was famous for its sixteen stained glass windows depicting scenes of the life of Jesus and stories from the scriptures. Sadly, in October 2007, a major fire damaged much of this important local building. The roof and all but one of the stained-glass windows were completely destroyed, with only the clock, bell tower and walls remaining. The new steel structure was designed to replicate the looks of the original building as much as possible. Intricate details comprised of a series of cruciform, curved rafters, butt welded to columns connected at the apex; becoming self-supporting when all four members of the cruciform were connected. To complete the project, the new reception and restaurant area was largely constructed from curved RHS and CHS tubing. Today the church is restored back to being a hub of the local community and we’re exceptionally proud of our contribution to such a challenging and great looking finished project.

Portslade – West Sussex

When Parker Steel, one of the UK’s largest steel stockholders, were planning a brand-new steel processing plant on the south coast we were delighted to be part of the supply chain. The building was a triple span tied portal structure with a footprint of circa 150,000 ft₂. Located on the sea front of Portslade, near Brighton, a particular key consideration was the corrosive environment. We applied an enhanced paint specification to the frame to ensure it was fully protected from the elements. In addition, our package included the supply and alignment of the crane beams, and the supply and installation of the metal decking to the 20,000 ft₂ office and staff facilities space contained within a two-storey office block. Further works included, the supply, fabrication and installation of the service walkways, open mesh panels and hand railing.

Bentinck Street – London

This is one of our more challenging and unusual recent projects, requiring particularly detailed planning and close working with our project partners. The project consisted of two separate elements. Firstly, we assisted with the design, fabrication and erection of the extensive temporary steel structure designed to support the existing façade while the rest of the property was demolished and subsequently rebuilt. This then led to the second stage and the install of the main steel structure behind the existing façade forming the new modern offices space. The busy central London location of Marylebone added to the project complexity, with the challenge to minimise disruption to the local businesses and residents and ensuring the deliveries and offloading of the materials were carried out in a timely and safe manner with effective traffic management plans in place.

This new 55,000 ft₂ Audi dealership for the Sytner Group, located in the heart of the Thames Valley, was a diverse project ultimately providing a Showroom, Workshop, Stock Holding area, Valet Building and Photography Studio. The Showroom included large trusses offering an open plan area with a first floor to one side. The Workshop came complete with a ramp to the rear which leads to the car deck creating a parking facility over the Workshop and Valet Building. In order to meet these diverse demands, we designed the steel framed structure using a combination of monopitch, portal and trussed frames, working closely with our client and the design team throughout.
